IELTS - International English Language Testing System

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an International Standardised Test of English Language proficiency. It is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 2 million tests taken in the last year.

IELTS was one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing over 21 years ago, and continues to set the standard for English language testing today. IELTS was established in 1989.

  • IELTS is the world’s proven English language test.
  • IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 8,000 organizations worldwide.
  • More than 2 million tests taken last year.
  • IELTS is recognised as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.
  • IELTS is the most widely accepted English language test that uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills.

IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment through more than 900 test centres and locations in over 140 countries.

IELTS assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking and is designed to reflect how you will use English at study, at work, and at play, in your new life abroad.

The IELTS test is developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment. It has an excellent international reputation, and is accepted by over 8,000 organisations worldwide, including schools, universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies.

You can take IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training – depending on the organization you are applying to and your plans for the future.

IELTS test takers and the organisations which rely on IELTS test results benefit from IELTS' continuing investment in quality assurance, research and development to ensure that the test remains robust and relevant.

International teams of writers contribute to IELTS test materials and invest in ongoing research to ensure that IELTS remains fair and unbiased – wherever and whenever the test is taken – and that IELTS encourages, reflects and respects international diversity and is fair to anyone who sits the test, regardless of nationality, background, gender or lifestyle.

The rigorous processes used to produce the test materials ensure that every version of the test is of a comparable level of difficulty, so that candidates’ results are consistent wherever and whenever they take the test.
