Where can I take IELTS ?

You can take IELTS in over 900 locations worldwide. Search for your nearest test centre on the IELTS Worldwide Search. IELTS centres have friendly, helpful staff who will help you with the registration process.

The British Council India offers IELTS tests at 38 locations across India. Registrations are centralised and are processed at the British Council offices in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata. 

 

When can I take IELTS ?

IELTS is available on 48 fixed dates a year – up to four times a month, depending on local demand. Check all the test dates for the year or go to your nearest centre to see its next test date.

 

How much does it cost ?

IELTS has a set fee for its test. The Academic and General Training tests are the same cost. To find out the test fee in your local currency, check the IELTS Worldwide Search for your nearest centre.

INR 11,100 till September 30, 2016

INR 12,100 from 1st May 2017

How to Pay ?

Pay through Cash or Demand Draft or Credit Card.

  • Pay online by Credit / Debit Card ( Visa, Visa electron, Master Card, American Express ) by visiting the British Council along with a copy of registration if applied online.
  •  Make cash payment at any ICICI bank branch by filling in the ICICI / British Council payment slip.  
  •  Send a demand drawn in favour of “British Council Division” along with a copy of the online registration confirmation. 

Demand drafts should be made to British Council Division and payable in :

  • Delhi for North India
  • Mumbai for West India
  • Chennai for South India
  • Kolkata for East India

How do I register for the test ?

Find your nearest IELTS centre and check the test dates to find two options that suit you. Note the deadline for registering for each test date.

You can register for the IELTS :

Online / In person at your nearest British Council office

By post / courier; send your completed application form to your nearest British Council office

Check with your organisation or on the Global Recognition System whether you need to sit an Academic or General Training test.

Print out the IELTS Application Form or ask your test centre for a copy. Read the information for candidates, terms and conditions, complete the form and sign it. Please make sure you have a valid postal address and use the same name as on your passport.

 

How to complete the application ?

Once you have completed the online registration process,

If you are paying online -

  • A copy of the email confirming that you have been registered online.
  • Two signed passport sized colour photographs, and sign the back of each. (not older than six months and without glasses).
  • A photocopy of your valid passport

If you do not send the above mentioned documents within 3 working days, your application will be automatically cancelled.

If you want your results to be sent automatically to a university or educational institution, include the correct details in the section on the IELTS Application Form.

Take your application into your IELTS test centre with the fees paid receipt. If you send it by mail, please talk to your centre about the method of payment.

Once you have registered, the test centre will confirm your IELTS test date, time and venue. Please note the Speaking test can be up to 7 days before or after the test date.

On the test day, you must bring the same passport or national identity card that you entered on the Application Form.

 

What photographs do I need to provide in my IELTS application ?

To apply for an IELTS test you will need to provide two identical passport-sized colour photographs that are no more than six months old. You will need to sign the back of each photo. You must not wear glasses in your application photographs.

 

What if I need to postpone or cancel my application ?

If you postpone or cancel your application more than 5 weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund minus an administration charge.

If you postpone or cancel within 5 weeks of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a serious medical reason. If you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date, you will receive a refund minus the local administrative cost. Please note, this does not apply to minor illnesses.

 

What if I am absent or sick on the test day ?

If you are away on the test day with no prior notice, you will lose your full fee. However, in cases of serious illness, if you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date, you will receive a refund minus the local administrative cost.
